I’ve been a movie guy for quite some time now. I think when you start watching more and more movies you start to appreciate new genres. For me, documentaries have become more and more appealing. Luckily that lead me to seeing the movie “Bully”.
This movie is absolutely life changing.
My memory of school isn’t the greatest. I was always the new kid because my family moved around a lot, so it was hard to fit in with any group of kids (not to mention just the popular kids). I can remember getting to a point in my education where I had decided to just give up on making friends, since I never knew when my family would be moving again. Luckily I didn’t get bullied too much because I would just lay low and try to blend in as best I could, however the advantage I had from going to many different schools was that I got to see how similar bullying patterns are from school to school.
There are so many different factors that come in to play with bullying; this movie points out many of them, but definitely not all. I think the scene’s that hit you the hardest are the ones that feature parents talking about their kids that have committed suicide because of bullying at school. I sat in the theatre very frustrated: 1) frustrated that these kids saw no other way out besides taking their own lives, 2) frustrated that in many cases it takes something this big for any action to be taken and 3) frustrated that it seems like many teachers/principals don’t realize how brutal these kids are to each other.
There are serious problems in the school system! For years schools have continued to become more lenient with many different issues. It’s great to see students having more freedom, but adjustments must be made to maintain some control over what goes on at our schools.
I give this movie a 10/10, because it honestly changed my life. I need to do more to try and help this situation. These kids need to know that there is more to life than the 4 years of high school or 8 years of elementary school. I also think that these bullies need to know how much they are effecting the people they are picking on.
Go see this movie, and if it touches you as much as it touched me – find a way to help!
